MG Plasterers SECBL Round 15

SECBL Round 15.

The MG Plasterers SECBL Men’s summer competition has been entertaining and unpredictable, possibly one of the best for some years. Two Men’s teams, Bulldogs Red and Roos, hang up their uniforms as the final series commences next Wednesday. The competition is however likely to continue in this vein especially now that several “young guns” may not be suiting up due to undertaking tertiary studies in the city. In contrast, the Women’s SECBL competition has been a battle between the “heavy weights” Millicent Cats and Cougars.

The closest game of Round 15 was that played between Men’s League leader Panthers and third placed Cats showing a final margin of 4 points, 68-64 in Panthers’ favour. While Panthers lined up with the minimum of 5 players, they appeared to have a handle on the game for most of the minutes against a full- strength Cats. After a “pedestrian” even first quarter, the visitors opened up a 9- point lead at the main break on the back of a 20- point haul by Kurt Rodis. Meanwhile Cats’ trio Josh Murphy and the Bradley brothers finished consistently for Cats. Panthers’ talented junior Ollie Thomson joined team leader Jak Ryan to extend the team’s lead to 12 at three quarter time. The game then took on a different look as a “fired up” Frazer Bradley took over to score 13 of Cats’ 22-point final quarter. In contrast Panthers could only manage 12 and relied on a steadying basket by Rob Hein to secure the win.

The Bulldogs Blue versus Roos game served as a solid finals’ hit-out for the Blues Men. Roos were seriously undermanned but continued to compete and contest throughout the game. Blue opened confidently to lead 18-10 at quarter time and 41-30 at half time. Simon Berkefeld led a Blue’s lift in the third period to have the result in safe keeping, 71-43. Will Wright was strong late in the game as Bulldogs Blue cruised to a 98-68 win after a last- minute surge by Roos when Caleb and Dale Bachmann pulled off an 11-3 run before the final siren. All six Blues players recorded double figure tallies while Dale and Caleb Bachmann had 27 and 25 points respectively.

A positive away from the scoreboard for Bulldogs Blue was the minutes Matt Berkefeld played after his prolonged absence from action.

Cougars Men made secure their finals spot with a solid win over Bulldogs Red, 72-57. It was a special night for junior Josh Holmes, who scored a three pointer, the opening score for the game and his first score in senior SECBL competition. Toby deWit started confidently for Cougars but a team effort had Red in front, 19-15, after 10 minutes of play. Shaun Lock made threes on either side of the break as the sides traded baskets. Ousey and deWit were busy for Cougars while Reid was the focus for Red. A 6-0 run gave Cougars the lead, 32-30 at half time. The third quarter featured an 11-0 for Cougars, resulting from 12 points by Ousey and setting up a 59-42 scoreline at three quarter time. The final period followed a similar pattern with Cougars in control for a final score of 72-57. Cougars’ “awesome foursome” in Stafford, Hollitt, Ousey and deWit had double figure totals and will present defensive challenges for opponents in the coming finals. Duncan Reid and Shaun Lock led the tallies for Red.

Current Women’s League leader, Cats fielding a younger side than usual, was made to work hard for a win against Bulldogs/Roos. An even team effort took Cats by surprise and gave Bulldogs/Roos the lead, 14-6, at quarter time. Cats went to work, closed the gap and saw the lead change hands until Sophie Wrightson set up a one- point lead for Bulldogs/Roos at half time, 30-29. Bulldogs/Roos scoring chances dried up as talented juniors Lucy Denton and Georgia Winter led Cats to 10 points lead at three quarter time. The game ended with an even contest featuring consistent efforts from Emily Winter for Cats along with Claire Hunter and Ellen Brown of Bulldogs/Roos. Final scores read 56-44 Cats’ way. Lucy Denton scored a game high 22 points, Emily Winter had 16 and Georgia Winter 12. Reliable Claire Hunter finished with 14 points for Bulldogs/Roos.

Insufficient numbers caused Panthers Women to forfeit to Cougars in the last regulation game of the season.
