The 2019 City of Mount Gambier Junior Basketball Tournament proved to be another highly successful event for Basketball Mount Gambier. Nominations in excess of 100 teams in the age groups of Under 10’s through to Under 18’s from Country SA and the Western Districts of Victoria drew more than two thousand players, parents and spectators to the city.

Post tournament comments revealed that the players and families enjoyed the weekend especially the competitions, which were played in good spirit along with the first-class hospitality extended by the local community.

The preparation for the Tournament, led by Administrator Teresa Stewart, laid the foundation for a well- run event, which was magnificently supported by a large contingent of dedicated volunteers who gave many hours to ensure its continued success.

Deserving of special mention was the outstanding job done by Referees Coordinators, Mandy and Danika Jolley. Local referees stepped up to cover the limited number of referees and overall all responsibilities were met.    

The assistance of naming rights sponsor, the City of Mount Gambier, together with local business house major and division sponsors played a critical part in this success. The willingness of local schools to make their multi-purpose halls available reflects the support of the community to this annual sporting event.  

The introduction of the Under 10 Boys competition generated lots of interest and excitement for players and spectators alike.

A total of 21 divisions of competitions in age groups from Under 10 to Under 18 were played over the 2 days involving around 250 games.

The Junior Lakers played off in seven of the nine Division 1 Grand Finals and were successful in three, Under 16 Boys, Under 18 Women and Under 18 Men.

Murray Bridge was successful in three Division 1 competitions.
