2019 SA Country Basketball Junior Squads Named

Basketball Mount Gambier junior basketballers feature strongly in the 2019 SA country squads with 23 gaining selection. The number of Under 15, 16 and 18 members match up with representation of previous years.

Two bottom age Lakers, Ollie Thomson and Jaidyn Lawrence are members of the Under 18 Boys’ Squads. Ollie comes in following a solid and consistent performance as a member of the SA Country 2018 Under 16 State team while Jaidyn has had his persistence and hard work rewarded by this selection. Former junior Laker, Lewis Stratford is also a member of this squad.

Six Under 18 Lakers girls have been named in the Country Cup teams. Emily Close and Keryl Ousey continue on from representing SA Country at the 2018 Australian under 18 Championships as first year players. Emily Dawe and Sarah Nulty move up from the Under 16 Nationals while Claire Hunter and Mikaela Horrigan return to the state scene.

Mount Gambier is strongly represented in the Under 15 and 16 boys’ squads. Jake Walker and Josh Holmes move on from State Under 15’s to Under 16’s while Noah Sims will make his first appearance in state colours in the Under 16 squad. The Mount Gambier’s impact is further evident in former Mount Gambier Coach, Dan Stratford being appointed as Head Coach and Bryan Green Coach of the Sharks in this age group.        

Four Lakers’ Boys will be travelling to Melbourne to play for SA Country in the Southern Cross Challenge in January. They are Joel Bryant, Zach Nulty, Lochlan Thiele and Ben Young. This quartet participated in the 2018 Country Cup in the Under 14 age group. Tom Daly has been appointed Assistant Coach of the Sharks team.

Tara Bryant and newcomer, Sarah Ritter and Megan Reid are the Lakers’ players in the Under 16 Girls’ squad along with Alyssa Duncan and Rori Perryman, members of the victorious 2018 Country Cup Under 14 team, will play in the Southern Cross Challenge.

Three Lakers juniors, Mackye Baron, Harry Wright and Paige Exelby, will experience state level basketball competition for the first time as members of the SA Country Basketball Under 14 teams competing in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury in January.       

Bryan Green will conduct a demanding two- week training program for these athletes prior to the events. The 2019 Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup will be held in Albury/Wodonga from January 12th to 19th and the Southern Cross Challenge in Melbourne from January 17th to 21st.
