THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
Seriously, how good is footy?
A great days exercise for body and soul. You only have to witness the banter on the sidelines, the knowing nod, a sideways glance, and the laughter to know it’s good for our collective wellbeing.
I’m sure we’d rather have been forced to huddle under the broad Kimba verandahs seeking shelter from yet another deluge as the heavens opened up- but if it’s not to be, then it may as well be perfect weather for sport.
Another massive crowd turned up, the only car parking space I could find was way over by the horse stalls. Much to my surprise, there was Paul Schaefer feeding Makybe Diva - they both had long faces - I didn’t realise Makybe Diva was a Richmond supporter too.
The Storm won the toss and elected to go downhill with the breeze, but it was Kimba who did all the early attacking; they had a goal on the board in less time than it takes Doona Francis to do a comb over. They threatened to have two on the board inside a minute but were thwarted by a great Jared Sampson intercept. And then he was at it again, this time forward of centre; the beneficiary of a free kick - a 25m penalty enabling him to kick the Storms first.
The Storm won the third quarter 3.2 to 2.1; but outside of that the game belonged to the Tigers.
Had they not squandered opportunities in the final term where they kicked 7.9 to nothing the margin would have exploded to triple figures - as it was it was an emphatic 75 points.
For mine the glaring difference, and it was the same when the Tigers defeated Ports, is their use of crisp handballs that hit targets and will players into space for easy release by hand or foot.
The Kimba midfielders are very, very good at it - so it should come as no surprise that their named best were - Ben Clements, Reece Rayson, Ryley Maitland and Jesse Kemp.
Burger Fitzgerald finished with 7 goals despite captaining the wayward brigade in that final term.
I’m not sure what Leigh O’Donohue is up to but young Red seemed to slot in seamlessly, could be the recruit of the year, although Jai Newsham might already have that well and truly stitched up, it was another livewire performance from the energetic wingman again today.
It was a blowout result at Port Neill with the home side taking the spoils by 98 points
Mullet Masters led the way with 7 goals, but you can’t beat youthful exuberance.
Seth Hutchins, Cooper Llewelyn (whom Norwood had listed as an emergency), Declan Smith and Jake Bammann all had great games for Ports, only Declan missing out on troubling the scoreboard attendants.
Jake Bammann’s goal was enough to take him to the top of the Bammann Family goal kicking tree - (according to Tom Davey and Calvey Hartwig) - of course the old mans tally would have have been considerably more but for the league playing with Burley footballs in the late 80’s!
