The Stawell 13 and Under Football Association came to a close on Friday night, with the Magpies being crowned as premiers.
The Magpies finished their perfect season in dominant fashion, defeating the Bulldogs 7.7.49 to 0.0.0.
The Bulldogs were able to hold the Magpies to just one goal in the first quarter, but could not hold their opponents quiet for the entirety of the game. The Magpies went through the season undefeated.
Magpies coach Rhett Mellor said it was a special season from his team.
“All the boys and girls had a magnificent season,” he said.
“The Bulldogs played really well in the grand final, but our kids were able to get some momentum and use that.
“It started off very tight in the first quarter so it was good to see our kids not get put off by the situation of the grand final and play to their best.
“It is very rewarding for the kids to win. Three years ago this group was struggling at the bottom of the ladder, now they are premiers.”
Hamish Smith was adjudged best on ground in the grand final.
It is the first premiership for the Magpies since 2011.
Magpies player Cameron Wickham picked up the best and fairest for both the league and the Magpies.
Wickham won the league’s best and fairest last year too, making him the first player in the association’s history to win the award twice.
Mellor said Wickham is a pleasure to coach.
“Cam had fantastic season once again,” he said.
“His dedication and for for the game shines out which is great to see.
“He still has one more year in the comp, so he could even win another best and fairest next year.”
Mellor's son Kyan Mellor topped the competition goal kicking leaderboard, finishing with 41 goals – 15 ahead of teammate Wickham.
“To kick 41 goals from 12 games is a great effort,” Rhett Mellor said.
“I am very proud of how he has gone.”
The Magpies went through the season relatively unchallenged, but Mellor said he believes the other teams have improved significantly.
“To see all the teams improve from the start of the season to now is so pleasing,” he said.
“All the kids turn up to the games week in, week out and try their best, which is fantastic.”
Mellor said the committee are to be commended for the season.
“It was just a magnificent season,” he said.
“The committee put in a lot of hard work to make sure everything ran smoothly and so all the kids enjoyed themselves.”
