A message to Collingwood Basketball Association members from the President and Committee

1st May 2020

Dear Collingwood families and friends

As we enter another week of Stage 3 restrictions in Victoria, I felt it was timely to provide an update on how the Collingwood All Stars are traveling during these unprecedented times. The COVID-19 pandemic carries significant adverse consequences for the club. Indeed, most sporting associations around the country – amateur and professional – are facing circumstances that were previously unimaginable.

The Committee is working closely with Collingwood College and The Hon. Richard Wynne regarding our financial obligations in relation to the new stadium. Richard is a tremendous supporter of our association and was instrumental in securing the $8.3 million stadium redevelopment. I’m pleased to advise that both Collingwood College and the Andrews Labor government fully support the association and will ensure the financial impacts we now face are minimised as best as possible.

Measures have been put in place to ensure that in the immediate term no full-time staff are stood down. Important work will continue.

The association will continue working with Basketball Victoria (and other relevant bodies) regarding a possible start-up date. While all basketball is currently suspended until at least 31 May, this date is being regularly reviewed. Basketball Victoria believes there will be some form of competition this year and our club will be ready for any resumption. Until Basketball Victoria provides definitive advice, we are unable to make any decisions regarding registration fees.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 26 May 2020 and the Committee currently intends to hold the AGM on this date. We will likely need to use a digital platform that many of us have recently become familiar with (such as Zoom and Skype) - details will be provided shortly.

Despite our many challenges, the Committee is working as hard as possible to ensure the club not only survives this crisis, but comes out the other side stronger and more united than ever.

Please stay safe and well.

A message from the President and Committee

24th March 2020

Dear Collingwood families and friends

Everyone would be aware of the significant impact the spread of COVID-19 (also known as the Coronavirus) is having on people and communities worldwide. Even more unsettling is the uncertainty of the full effect of the virus in the short and longer term.

With the trauma of growing numbers of illnesses and job losses each day, the place of a local basketball club in the overall scheme of things can seem quite insignificant. However, with basketball pulled from us so suddenly and unexpectedly, the important place the All Stars holds in so many people’s lives has become clearer than ever. People young and old have told me just how much they’re missing the club. In just a few short weeks it has left a hole in many of our lives.

The club extends its sympathies to the members who are being directly affected by COVID-19. The closure of all of Victoria’s non-essential services only furthers that impact. For us the suspension of basketball has meant not just the loss of the activity we love for our families, coaches and players, but a significant loss of income for many casual staff, as well as a detrimental effect on our full time staff.

The committee and staff are working hard to address several strategic, operational and financial issues that have arisen as a result of COVID-19. All sporting clubs and associations across the country will be facing very similar issues.

While Basketball Victoria has publicly said there will be no basketball until at least May, in reality the hiatus may extend well beyond this date, potentially the entire winter season and beyond. Please be assured that the committee is doing all it can to ensure the club’s future beyond the impact of COVID-19.

The Committee expects to provide an update on our medium to long-term approach to dealing with COVID-19 in the very near future. Until then, we kindly request your understanding, patience and support as we determine what steps need to be taken. Please continue to support and look out for each other during this challenging time.

Go All Stars!
