A total of 25 athletes from seven Pacific nations including the Cook Islands will tackle the Pacific Mini Games triathlon course tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
The Olympic distance course will see the athletes swim 1.5km, bike 40km and run 10km all around the Avatiu and Nikao area.
The Cook Islands team of Jennie George, Apii Napa, Rangi Apera, Geoff Stoddart, and Thomas Henderson is very confident leading up to the one-day event and hopes for a minimum team medal.
A team medal is based on the times of the three fastest athletes (two women and one man or two men and one woman) which is combined for a total overall time.
At the 2007 Samoa South Pacific Games, the Cook Islands team scooped up the team’s bronze medal and they hope to do that again or better this time.
New Caledonia and Tahiti are tipped to be the teams to watch out for as the two nations have dominated regional triathlon meets.
The triathlon starts at 8.30am on the dot with a race briefing scheduled for this afternoon at 4 at the Edgewater Resort and Spa.
With the triathlon venue being central, there is sure to be plenty of action and even better – it’s free. - Matariki Wilson: Cook Islands News
