Top Cook Islands athletes took their fellow javelin competitors seriously at the first medal event of the Pacific Mini Games competition.
Both Samantha Lockington and Tereapii Tapoki achieved personal bests at the event. Unfortunately they were overshadowed by the French Polynesian countries. For Tereapii this was her first attempt at javelin at competition level and her best throw of just over 40 metres was a very creditable performance in the circumstances.
An unsuccessful protest from one of the Tahitian contestants delayed progress during the event, but New Caledonia had the numbers and the javelin skills to take the top two medals. Tahiti had to be satisfied with bronze.
Their event provided the Pacific Mini Games 2009 with their first medal presentation and the first flags to be raised to the sounds of the winner’s national anthem.
