Every year, 4 in every 16 young Aussies experience a mental health issue. But 3 of those 4 won’t get the help they need.

The TAYhYA program is a unique peer based program. Young volunteers attend sports clubs to facilitate interactive mental health workshops to increase capacity of young people, which gain awareness and knowledge of mental illness, services available, how to support a friend going through a tough time and how to reduce the stigma around mental health.

Only 13 per cent of young men with mental health issues seek out professional help.

headspace Adelaide is now seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) applications into the next round of workshops available to sports clubs. This round closes Tuesday February 12, 2019, with applications reviewed on the evening of Wednesday February 13, 2019.

To express your interest and to apply, please complete this form– it will take around 5-10 minutes to complete.

52 percent of young people aged 12–25 that have identified having a mental health problem in the last 12 months state they would be too embarrassed to discuss the problem with anyone, and 49 percent would be afraid of what others think.

About the program

The TAYhYA program facilitates 40-60 minute mental health workshops directly to sports club members.

The peer-based mental health workshops cover:

- General headspace information

- Mental health information, including myth busting

- Tips for a healthy headspace

- How to support a friend

The TAYhYA program generally aims to provide each workshop to a maximum of 100 people per session.

The workshops also utilise an interactive audience clicker system, information slides, videos and group activities.

TAYhYA are volunteers that represent headspace Adelaide, which is located at 173 Wakefield Street, Adelaide, South Australia. Workshops days and times are subject to their availability.

26 percent of young people aged 12 – 25 would not tell anyone if they had a mental health problem, and 22 percent would be unlikely/very unlikely to discuss it with their family doctor.

About headspace Adelaide

headspace Adelaide is a free and confidential service where young people aged between 12 and 25 can access qualified youth mental health professionals. We do this through two programs: headspace Adelaide Primary Platform and the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program (hYEPP).

The headspace Adelaide Primary Platform offers short-term, early intervention counselling support for young people going through a tough time or worried about their mental health.

Adelaide’s hYEPP team ensures the provision of early intervention, responsive, and recovery focused care for young people who are at high risk of or are experiencing a first episode of psychosis. This is based on the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) model of care.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
