Lady Rockets Lose to Southern

North Adelaide Lady Rockets Lose Tough One v Southern

Our starting five were looking strong as they lined up against the current position 2 team, but it was always going to be close with Southern the definite favourites. Lauren opened our scoring with a terrific three and Opal followed with a nice shot. Kirsty had a tough assignment all night and Norrisha made a great grab. Tayla scored next but Opal was on fire with a great basket then a firm block. Courtney stepped onto the court followed by Sophie. With Jo away, these girls really had to step up and Courtney in particular would go on to play a terrific game. Southern had the lead in a low scoring quarter due to the fierce defence at both ends, 10 to 16

Sophie showed strong hands and after several turnovers, Courtney made a lovely three! She then drove hard to the basket and was fouled; next she hesitated but chose to shoot the ball and was rewarded. Taylor left the bench and made a great rebound. It got a bit physical as Kirsty was shoved but Norrisha found some space and made a smooth three. Courtney continued to drive hard and curled off the set screen well to score again. Shannon joined the team on court and defensive pressure caused a Southern travel. Not quite enough pressure to stop their scoring though, their lead was 27 to 34 at the long break.

Tayla started the quarter with a nice basket whilst Kirsty applied fierce ball pressure. Tayla and Opal scored and again, great teamwork in transition lead Opal to score assisted by Lauren. The team gained ground to be just 2 points behind, with a Lauren making a sneaky steal; Tayla blocking and Courtney making foul shots. Sophie’s pass to Kirsty assisted her to score and we took a 1 point lead. But Southern fought back and were again leading at the break, 45 to 46.

Despite great scoring by Opal and Courtney, a surprise steal by the opposition contributed to their lead growing. Norrisha made a nice shot and strong defence by Opal caused Jess to travel. Lauren made a three and the crowd cheered and felt a glimmer of hope return. The team never gave up fighting for every possession, however perhaps due to consistently not boxing out enough under the ring; they lost the game and top spot to Southern 56 to 67.

Top scorers were: Opal 15 pts, Tayla C 14 pts and Courtney 12 pts
The top rebounders were Norrisha with 7 and most assists by Norrisha with 5

See you Saturday night 630pm at Port when we take on West Adelaide, then come home at lunch time to see us avenge our loss against Woodville on Sunday.
