ROUND NINETEEN: Mt Gambier Pioneers v Forestville Eagles

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

As we know, the Pioneers just fell to the Sabres only days ago and are back in action against arguable a tougher opponent in Forestville. Forestville are currently leading the league but depending on this outcome, that lead may disappear. With the top seed on the line, Mount Gambier will be searching for an answer to their on court problems last weekend in preparation for the Eagles. Last weekend, the Eagles put on a passing clinic and demonstrated the benefits of consistent ball movement by out-diming their counterpart Norwood 21-8. Oceana Paulena Hamilton notched a double-double with a game high 18-points and 11-rebounds in the 25-point blowout victory. Averaging only 9-points per contest, this is a prime example of Forestville’s wide range of potential scorers. Astoundingly, the Pioneers had 3 players play full minutes against Sturt last weekend. Frost, Roberts and Winter all clocked up 40 minutes on the floor and in turn played well but were unable to take the W home. This fixture against the Eagles will show where the side is truly at, as we edge closer to the finals with their bench combining for 16 minutes of court time. Come finals, the lack of rotation may not be the best of ideas. Heading into what will surely be Match of the Round, the Eagles’ depth will be enough to edge out the ladies from the Mount.

Hang Time Prediction: Forestville Eagles

MEN by Daniel Renfrey

Mt Gambier are at the top of the ladder now, and with good reason. Their 14-point win over the Sabres in Round 18 was impressive with the team played stifling defence, holding Sturt to just 79 points and stealing the ball 9 times. Barkley and Sam Daly were also impressive, with 56 points, 12 assists and 21 boards combined. Forestville will be eager to test their potential against the league’s in-form team. If they can play strong defence and give good support to star players on offence, they’ll be a good chance. A player like Michael Harris could be key for the side and if he has a big game along with some other notable names the Eagles may be able to come away from Mt Gambier with a win. At the moment though, you can’t bet against the Pioneers.
