ROUND FIFTEEN: Southern Tigers v Eastern Mavericks

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

Don’t let the positions of the Tigers and Mavericks fool you into believing this will be a Maverick blowout victory. Currently, the Mavericks are in a top four position, yes, but the Tigers managed to push the 2nd placed Sabres till the end in their last matchup and fell by a single possession. Sturt have been one of the best teams this season and being held to only 57-points offensively says quite a lot about Southerns’ defensive efforts in the 2nd leg of their double header. Just over ten points was the separation between the two sides in Round 7 despite Carmen Tyson-Thomas dropping a game high 30-points. Both sides have proved themselves dangerous if they are hot, including the Mavericks who knocked off the Eagles in Round 12 showing that they are not to be slept on. If Southern bring the same game which forced the Sabres to win by 2-points, Eastern may have a slugfest on their hands.

Hang Time Prediction: Eastern Mavericks

The Tigers coasted for the most part in their Round 14 game against the Sabres, winning fairly easily in the end, 76-90. Turnage was again a standout for Southern, making his presence on the glass and in the paint felt and also scoring in bunches for a Tigers side who have needed scoring since the Drmic injury. The Mavericks, on the other hand, have not played for a while now due to their bye in Round 14. The side will be eager to get back onto the court though, and will be hungry for a win. Eastern could be very well set up for this matchup, with players like Cherry and Morris able to go head-to-head with someone like Turnage. If they can negate his impact on offence, their team might stand a chance. However, being at home the Tigers will undoubtedly turn up the heat on both offence and defence, and their talent and intensity could be too much for Eastern to handle.
