ROUND TWELVE: Mount Gambier Pioneers v West Adelaide Bearcats

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

A win for either side will put the pressure on the 4th placed Mavericks with either side closing the gap on a top 4-position depending on a Maverick result. Fresh off a set of wins in Round 11, the Bearcats and Pioneers are split by 1-win and 2-points proving the importance of their Ice House clash. The ability for both sides to find the bottom of the net is definitely prominent but the wider range of scorers, the Bearcats boast may be problematic for the Pioneers. West Adelaide’s bench had an impressive 42-point outing last weekend and may be the deciding factor as to who takes home the W.

The Pioneers grabbed another big win in Round 11, topping the Mavericks 126-79 at home. While life was made a bit easier for the Mt Gambier side when Eastern lost Morris early into the game, they were still extremely convincing on both sides of the court. The team was brilliant defensively, recording 5 blocks and 15 steals, and also took advantage of an undermanned Mavericks by attacking the paint relentlessly on offence. Barkley was immense with 36 points, 19 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, and Tom Daly was also big with 33 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 4 boards. The Bearcats, who will be disappointed with their losing performance against the Panthers in Round 11, will need to be at their best to stop what looks to be a very dangerous Pioneers team. If they want to record an upset this round, they will need to avoid giving up high turnovers again. Players like Jefferson, Kubank and Thomas will also need to be efficient on both ends. This Pioneers team seems too hard for most teams to overcome however, and should get the win.
