India's latest Weightlifting champion,Yumnam Chanu. India's Yumnam Chanu has taken the gold medal in the Women's 58kg Weightlifting. She was a clear leader with a combined total of 185kg. The silver medal was won by Emily Quarton from Canada who had a combined total of 178kg. Quarton won on bodyweight over Australia's Natasha Barker, who also lifted 178kg but had to settle for the bronze.
Following her bronze medal lift, Baker announced her retirement, commenting "It is such an honour to represent your country in front of a home crowd. Performing in front of such a big crowd really lifts you up. This is the last time you will see me lift. I am retiring as of today, so that was my last lift and I was a bit emotional."
Baker will be dedicating more time to her son Brandon saying "I will need to give more time to this little one, it was all for him, this medal is for him.
Silver medallist Quarton, from Montreal, became the third Canadian Women's Weightlifter to earn a medal in these Games. Quarton said after her lifts "I expected more of myself, but this is my first Games, and at the end I just said 'Hey I am here - I'll go all out.'"
Rita Kari from Papua New Guinea was a close fourth with a combined total of 177kg.
In the Snatch, Chanu led on bodyweight with a lift of 80kg over Barker, who also lifted 80kg. Kari was third with 78kg.
In the Clean and Jerk, Chanu again led with a lift of 105kg, followed by Quarton with 101kg and Kari with 99kg.
Two National records were broken during the event: South African Mona Pretorius set a new Clean and Jerk (95kg) and total (170kg) record for her nation, while Kari set a new junior record for Papua New Guinea with her Snatch of 78kg.
The Men's 69kg event will be contested tonight.
