Career high for James Moors plus all the other news from college hoops

Former Harbour and Westlake forwards James Moors and Sam Mennenga make the headlines in the latest edition of our weekly roundup – both put in standout performances at the Charleston Classic Tournament last weekend. 

James posted a career high 24 points, on 10 from 12 shooting (including 2 from 2 three-pointers) as Colorado State accounted for South Carolina 85-53. The former Junior Tall Black also grabbed 9 rebounds in the Charleston Classic victory.

Also at the Charleston Classic Sam Mennenga was named to the Tournament Team. He scored 23 points as Davidson College saw off Old Dominion 66-61 having scored 15 points and 19 points in his previous two games at the Classic. That 57 points haul carried Sam beyond 500 career points, the 10th Harbour rep to score over 500 points in NCAA Men’s Division 1 basketball.One of the ten is Kruz Perrott-Hunt. South Dakota scored an 82-64 home win against Dakota State with Kruz scoring 15 points to move to 722 career points – up to 10th spot on the all-time list of Kiwi points scorers in NCAA Division I Men’s basketball passing Sam Waardenburg (711 points).

*North Harbour and Tall Blacks great Kirk Penney (1,454 points) is the Kiwi Men’s NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer.  

In women’s Division I contest Emme Shearer grabbed a team high 8 rebounds, to accompany 7 points and a couple of assists, in Portland’s 85-76 loss to UC San Diego.

In Men’s NCAA Division II play Sean Murphy scored 13 points and claimed a team high 9 rebounds as Nebraska Kearney defeated Haskell 94-87. He upped his rebounding count to 11, and added 6 points an 4 assists, in the 77-67 loss to Wayne State a couple of days later.

In Women’s Division II play Hannah Wentworth scored 18 points – all from 3-pointers – as Eckerd College pulled away from Lynn to win 82-51. Hannah is currently shooting the three ball at 48% having made 11 from 23 attempts in the early stages of the season.

Also effective from deep was Tessa Talo-Tomokino. She made 2 from 3 triples on her way to 9 points in the 72-55 defeat of Oklahoma Baptist. She followed that with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals as Northeastern State demolished Kansas Christian 87-41. 

Keeley Tini scored 8 points and Jordyn Maddix 6 as Auburn University at Montgomery won 99-72 against Spring Hill.

In NAIA Division I action Reihana Maxwell-Topia had a team equal high 10 points (4/5FG) to accompany 3 rebounds and 3 assists although St Francis, Illinois went down 90-58 to St Edwards.

In Junior College play Dallas Clayton had 9 points and a team high 7 rebounds in Missouri State West Plains 101-82 loss to Ellsworth.

Leo Wenham had a neat stats line of 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks as Southeast College beat Hesston College 82-71.

Parehuia Delamere put together a couple of all action displays as Western Texas College grabbed a pair of wins. 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals was the production in the 75-45 thumping of Trinidad State preceded by 12 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists in the tighter 55-53 victory over Coastal Bend College.

In the Australian WNBL Penina Davidson put in a strong performance as Melbourne Boomers thumped Canberra Capitals 103-68. Penina posted 19 points along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Yanni Wetzell and his ALBA Berlin team met powerhouse Real Madrid in the EuroLeague and found the going too tough losing 90-72 – Yanni had the satisfaction of scoring 10 points in the loss.
