Penina Davidson celebrates with a fine double.
Fresh from being named Female Player of the Year at the BBNZ Awards Dinner, Penina Davidson helped propel Nunawading Spectres to a winning double at the weekend.
On Saturday the Spectres narrowly beat Geelong Supercats 81-78 before recording a more comfortable win on Sunday, 106-82 against Dandenong Rangers.
Penina finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds against Geelong followed by 21 points, on 10 from 12 shooting, against Dandenong. Nunawading are mid-table in the NBL1 South Conference with a 3-2 record.
Also in NBL1 South action Mitch Dance scored 18 points but couldn’t prevent Albury Wodonga Bandits falling 98-69 to Kilsyth Flyers. The Bandits are now 0-5 this season.
Nearer home Sean Murphy and Zach Riley again had strong games for Auckland Huskies in their exciting 90-87 overtime win against Nelson Giants at Eventfinda Stadium in the NZ NBL on Sunday. Sean finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds whilst Zach tallied 7 rebounds and 5 points.
24-hours earlier Jaylen Gerrand scored 10 points for the Franklin Bulls in their 107-94 loss to Nelson Giants.
Jack Salt and Alex Talma were both in double figures as Canterbury Rams defeated Manawatu Jets 87-76. Alex scored 11 points whilst Jack, on his way to 13 points and 9 rebounds, almost brought the ring and backboard down with one thunderous dunk.
Jono Janssen posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawkes Bay Hawks took care of business against Southland Sharks winning 85-73.
In addition to Penina Davidson being recognized at the BBNZ Awards Dinner five other Harbour personalities were acclaimed - Corey Webster, Kruz Perrott-Hunt, Matt Lacey Barbara Weadon and Jeff Olson.
Barbara was elected to the BBNZ Hall of Fame for her remarkable service to basketball at local, national and international level.
Long-time Board member and administrator Jeff Olsen was named a Life Member of BBNZ.
Matt Lacey was awarded Coach of the Year and Kruz Perrott-Hunt was awarded Junior Male Player of the Year.
Corey Webster, shortly to return to New Zealand with the Breakers, was awarded the Male Player of the Year trophy. We are incredibly proud of these members of our community.
The awards were recognising achievements in 2019 having not been presented last year due to Covid.
