Latest news from college basketball in the States

Emme Shearer is one of a number of former Breeze players having a good season in the States. The freshman has been given added responsibility in Portland University’s backcourt having been promoted to a starting berth for the last seven games.

In a game postponed for 24-hours due to wintry weather Emme added 4 assists and 3 rebounds to 11 points in the 74-71 loss to San Francisco. The Pilots now 7-6 in West Coast Conference fixtures.

In the Atlantic 10 Conference Virginia Commonwealth University, with Akienne-Tera Reed scoring 10 points, pushed top of the league Dayton all the way before falling 67-62. Reed, closing in on 1400 career points, also produced 4 assists and 2 blocks for 7-4 VCU.

In NCAA Division II play Chanel Brodeur-Muir was given her first start of the season for St Thomas Aquinas. Chanel responded with 6 points (3/7FG) and a couple of rebounds in a stirring 60-57 comeback win. Aquinas (2-1 in East Coast Conference fixtures) trailed 46-35 at three-quarter time before surging to victory.

Dallas Baptist University (12-2 in conference games) and Will Heather are enjoying a profitable season. Heather had 9 points and 5 rebounds in DBU’s 112-62 rout of Southwestern Adventist. The 9 points matched his season average with the former Rosmini College forward leading the team in blocks (20) and second in assists (47).

Congratulations to Rashaan Smith who posted her highest collegiate score tallying 11 points (5/6FG) as Dawson College easily accounted for United Tribes 106-44 in Junior College play.

Jazz Kailahi-Fulu and Keeley Tini continue to carry a heavy load for Williston State College. In their 61-55 road win at Dakota at Bottineau, the pair scored half the teams points and secured 50% of the rebounds also.

Jazz finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Keeley produced 14 points and 8 rebounds. The pair are leading Williston’s scoring this season, each averaging a shade over 14 points per game.

The pair again led the Williston scoring a couple of days later when they were defeated 64-52 by North Dakota State College of Science. Jazz led all scorers with 16 (7/9FG) and Keeley bagged 9 points.
