Fotu and Salt outstanding - college hoops wrap

 

Dan Fotu and Jack Salt produced the standout performances amongst former Harbour representatives in the latest action from college hoops in the States. 

Dan Fotu is earning more and more minutes in his freshman season at St Mary’s, California. Dan rewarded coach Randy Bennett for displaying confidence in him by putting together a perfect shooting display as the Gaels stunned California Golden Bears winning 84-71. Fotu’s numbers were impressive knocking down 4 from 4 threes, his only two-pointer and both of his free throws.

Jack Salt scored a career high 12 points on 6 from 7 shooting and added a team high 7 rebounds as No 4 Virginia Cavaliers beat No 24 Maryland 76-71. 

Jack followed that up with 6 points and 4 rebounds as Virginia swept Morgan State 83-45. Virginia now 8-0 for the season.

Isaac Letoa and Dartmouth Big Green headed across the Atlantic to play a couple of games in the Belfast Classic. Dartmouth came away with a win and a loss, Isaac scoring with his only shot in the 91-77 win against Albany.

Biola University Eagles are 2-0 in PacWest Conference play after wins against Holy Names (61-50) and Notre Dame de Namur (59-50).

Alex Talma secured a dozen rebounds in each game in addition to 14 points against NDM and 7 points against Holy Names in a game described on the Biola website as a “choppy, foul heavy affair.”

Denhym Brooke produced 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals as Hawaii at Hilo lost a high scoring affair at Chaminade going down 114-101.

Zara Jillings, making her first start of the season, posted an all-round 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal playing the whole 40 minutes but Fordham University were well beaten by Georgetown 58-38.

Akiene-Tera Reed fouled out in 24 minutes as Virginia Commonwealth came from behind to edge Georgetown Hoyas 47-45 in adefence orientated game. Tera had 7 points and an assist in that time.

Georgia Perrott-Hunt was one of three Tiffin University players in double figures. However her 10 points (5/6FG) were not enough to get the Dragons over the line against Hillside – defeated 74-65. Tiffin open Great Midwest Conference play later this week.

Katie Diakhaby scored 4 points and added three rebounds and a block as Maryville Saints went down 68-47 to McKendree – the Saints 1-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Chanel Brodeur-Muir scored with her only shot as St Thomas Aquinas Spartans comfortably beat Caldwell 67-47. This was the first East Coast Conference game of the season for the Spartans who are the defending ECC champions after mounting a 27-5 campaign in 2017-18.

In Junior College Olivia Bell, in her second season at North Dakota State College of Science, filled the stats line with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and a steal as the Widcats clawed Ridgewater College 105-36 to improve to 7-2 for the season.

Keeley Tini and Hutchinson Community College are going even better having won their opening eight games. Keeley scored 10 points as the Blue Dragons steamed past Coffeyville 81-45 with her team now ranked 13thin the country.
