Players are only permitted to play for one team in the competition.

GAME RULES

  • A size six ball will be used for the Year 7&8 grade.
  • The 3-point rule will not apply.
  • No time outs.
  • The 3 & 5 second rule will apply, as to will the back over half rule.
  • Substitutions to be made on the whistle, referees will call the subs in.
  • Fouls are to be called, players can only receive 5 fouls before they are fouled out of the game (cannot return).
  • Free throws are to be given for shooting fouls and 5 team fouls. Each quarter a team may have 4 team fouls, on the 5th team foul and every foul after that there will be free throws.
  • Mercy Rule – any team that establishes a lead of 20 points or more must play back court defence, during which time there will be no traps or presses. Once the lead is reduced to 19 or below, the team may play full court again.
  • In the event of a draw, in semifinals and finals ONLY, teams will play 2 minutes of extra time. The foul count will continue as it was from the 4th quarter.
  • TEAMS TO PLAY MAN-TO-MAN DEFENCE when the ball is inside half court. Man-to-man defence is a requirement by Basketball New Zealand at all levels of basketball until the U17 age group. It requires the defensive player to defend a player in the attacking team. A player is deemed to be playing zone when they take up a position on the court and play defence on any player who comes into that part of the court. Around the key hole a player must be seen to react the movements of the attacking player, although they are allowed to come off their player if they are on the weakside (side away from the ball), to be in a position to help out if a player on the strongside (ball side) of the key is beaten by their attacking player. They can on occasions switch players however they must still be seen to be moving about with a player from the opposition team and not standing in one area taking on all players.

Any problems with this concept can be taken up with floor controllers at the control desk and someone will come and watch the game. Coaches found playing zone defence will be given a warning by the floor controller / referee coordinator. If the team continues to play zone they will be given a technical foul.
