THE Western Region Football League’s umpiring ranks have had a significant increase in female umpires in 2016.
Currently there are 45 female umpires across all age and competition levels involved in the WRFL this year.
With the introduction of an AFL women’s competition next season the focus on females in sport has dramatically increased over the past few months.
The WRFL along with the WRFL Umpires Association is encouraging women of all ages and abilities who are interested in being involved with football to take up umpiring.
Not only is there a clear pathway for females to play football at the highest level there is now more opportunities for females to officiate the game.
This year the amount of umpires on the list has also increased to 350, which is up by 15 per cent on last year’s numbers.
If anyone in the western region is interested in becoming an umpire, please contact WRFL Umpires’ Female Liaison Maree Wilke via wilke.maree.h@edumail.vic.gov.au
