In what is already shaping up as a landmark year for women’s football with the introduction of the AFL Women’s competition, the Western Region Football League is excited to announce it will run its own Girls Competition in 2017.
After a number of years being combined with the Essendon District Football League, the WRFL will have a standalone competition next year, featuring Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 girls.
The league has had an overwhelming number of queries from clubs wanting to be involved in the 2017 competition, with about 16 WRFL member clubs showing significant interest.
Currently there are at least eight teams committed in each of the Girls’ age groups, an exciting sign for the growth of the game in Melbourne’s west.
The WRFL is also committed to having a women’s competition next season, however the makeup of this is still to be determined with AFL Victoria.
“The WRFL is over the moon with the response from clubs,” WRFL CEO Bob Tregear said.
“The league is committed to growing female football in the west and the introduction of this new competition provides girls with a clearer football pathway.”
Mr Tregear said the league’s partnership with the Western Bulldogs would also provide some exciting opportunities for all involved.
“Everyone at the league is looking forward to working with clubs, players, coaches and our partners to make this competition as good as it can be,” he said.
“Next year will no doubt be a ground-breaking season for the WRFL.”
