SOME of Victoria’s most talented Under-15 multicultural and Indigenous players will this week take part in the AFL Female Diversity Championships in Shepparton.
This year’s championships will include both the National Under-15 Kickstart competition and the National All Nations Cup.
The teams for the highly-anticipated event were selected via talent identification trials and the inaugural Female Leadership camp.
Three rising footy stars from Melbourne’s west have been picked to represent the state in the All Nations team.
Sudanese star from Wyndhamvale, Mary Daw, Ethiopian player from Flemington Amren Abrahim and Lebanese player from Maribyrnong Stephanie Elias are named in the team.
AFL Victoria Diversity Manager Xavier Moloney said there is a lot of talent in the Victorian sides.
“Both our teams include a number of players who are new to football, but possess great athletic ability, as well as some girls who have been playing the sport for many years in the various Youth Girls competitions around the state,” he said.
“Our inaugural All Nations squad includes players from eight different countries, while our Kickstart team embraces 13 indigenous cultural heritages which demonstrate the vast array of talent we have in Victoria.
“The Kickstart and All-Nations programs might be football focussed, but it’s also about developing young leaders and strengthening their knowledge of their cultural heritage.”
The Female Diversity Championships will wrap up on September 29.
