WERRIBEE Districts have shown that they are the team to beat with a dominating 74-point win over third-placed Hoppers Crossing at Soldiers Reserve.
Although known for their slow starts this season, the Tigers got off to a flyer with the first five goals of the game and led by 24-points at the first change.
Werribee Districts’ fast ball movement gave them a lot of scoring chances but inaccurate kicking in the second quarter meant that they could only stretch the margin to 40-points at half-time.
Not content with their lead, Werribee Districts came out firing again with two quick goals from Aaron Law to start the third term, but strong defence from Hoppers Crossing kept the margin to 46-points despite the Tigers’ dominance.
The Tigers’ capped off the performance with another five goal burst to start the final term, including a great individual goal from Nicholas Buykx, and took home the 74-point win.
Mading Atem and Nicholas Buykx were outstanding for Werribee Districts while Aaron Law kicked five goals.
Lochlan McDonald was solid in the midfield for Hoppers Crossing while Jackson Fullerton was the Warriors’ only multiple goal scorer with two.
Deer Park maintained their spot on top of the ladder with a 12-point win over fifth-placed Altona at John McLeod Reserve.
Altona got off to a strong start with a four goal to two first quarter to lead by nine points at quarter time, but Deer Park were able to slowly drag back the margin until they trailed by just a single point at the final change.
A four goal to two final quarter gave the Lions the come from behind win and keeps them in top spot with just two rounds to go.
Mark Galea was the star for Deer Park, kicking five goals in his first game back after spending two months with the seniors. Joel Menadue also kicked a bag, finishing with five goals for the Vikings.
Yarraville Seddon effectively ended Spotswood’s chances of a finals spot with a 13-point win at Yarraville Oval.
In a game that was close all day, Yarraville Seddon took a slim lead in the first quarter and held onto it, but inaccuracy meant that they could only manage a narrow victory.
Liam Murray finished with three goals for the Eagles while Mickey Nicholls starred for Spotswood with five of the team’s eight goals.
Round 18 will see Werribee Districts travel to McLean Reserve to meet Spotswood. Yarraville Seddon will host Deer Park at Yarraville Oval and Altona will play Hoppers Crossing at Grant Reserve.
