AFL Victoria has today announced a revamped Community Championship model, which will see leagues across the state go head-to-head in 2016.
The overhauled model features some metropolitan and country leagues playing-off against one another for the first time.
In 2016, the Western Region Football League has been scheduled to host the Ballarat Football League on the weekend of May 21 and 22.
Previously, metropolitan competitions would play in the AFL Victoria Senior Metropolitan Championships and country leagues would play in the WorkSafe Country Championships.
“The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to be one of the most exciting initiatives within community football in 2016 and potentially for years to come, as the opportunity to participate in senior representative programs continue to be a highlight for footballers in grass root community competitions across the state,” AFL Victoria Community Football Operations Manager Gerard Ryan said.
WRFL Football Operations manager David Newton said the inter-league competition provided great benefits to the league.
“The WRFL has played in the Metropolitan Championships for the past two years,” he said.
“We are excited and looking forward to continuing to be a part of this revamped AFL Victoria initiative and taking on the Ballarat League in 2016.”
Leagues have been pitted against each other in a manner that will assist AFL Victoria in confirming the ranking of leagues for 2017 and beyond.
This year, the WRFL 8.6(54) were defeated by the EFL 13.10(88).
Meanwhile, the WRFL’s opponents Ballarat, had a big win against rivals Bendigo, winning by 77-points.
More information surrounding the WRFL representative team will be released in coming months.
