The WRFL would like to congratulate Albion favourite Steven Pearce who will lace up the boots for the 300th time this weekend.
Taking home three premiership medallions and a Goal Kicking Award over the journey, "Pearcey" spoke to WRFL Media Manager Kirstie Fitzgerald ahead of his milestone game agasint St.Albans this Saturday.
NAME: Steven Pearce
NICKNAME: "Pearcey"
FAVOURITE POSITION: Full Forward
THIS SEASON’S HIGHLIGHT: Working with a great bunch of blokes at Albion and helping them with some Forward skills.
BEST THINGS ABOUT FOOTBALL: Definitely the mateship, nothing better than having a beer after the game with your mates.
PRE-GAME RITUAL: Getting my ankles taped by the same trainer.
1. How do you feel about playing your milestone game?
Proud and sad at the same time. I know time has caught up to me and the end is getting close. I’m very proud to play my 300th at a very proud club in Albion.
2. Tell us a little bit about your career and your rise up the ranks.
Played all my juniors at Sunshine Y.C.W. Got a call up when I was playing U18’s to play in the seniors from my first senior coach Freddy Hall. Then moved to Braybrook a couple of years later after a phone call from Steve Thom and played in a great finals series there I and was very close in playing in a flag. Finally found myself at Albion and played in two flags in two years and will never forget the Division One flag in 2010. I also played in a Division Three flag at Braybrook which I hold close to me as well.
3. What has been the most memorable moment for you whilst playing football and why?
Definitely the 2010 Grand final because we were coming up against Spotty who had won the previous 3 x flags and had smashed us earlier in the year, and with a lot of hard work we were able to turn the tables in the last game of the year. It was a great day playing with mates and getting a great result for the club.
4. What has been the most valuable piece of advice your coach has given you over the journey?
They have all yelled a lot of things at me but just basic stuff like keeping your feet and playing from in front of your man helped me over the years.
5. What are your expectations for the year ahead and for the future?
Being our last game of the year it would be great to come off with a win. We haven’t had the wins we wanted this year but this group has improved all year and will only get better in the next couple of years behind Timmsy.
6. What do you plan to do once you hang up the boots?
I have spent a lot of my time at football clubs and with a young family at home it’s time to spend time watching their sporting careers. Maybe some coaching down the track, I have learnt a lot this year thanks to Timmsy
7. What awards/accolades have you won in your career?
I have won a Seniors Goal Kicking award at Braybrook, but nothing compares to the 3 flags.
