It seems experience and knowledge are the key elements Dean Callaway will bring to his new role at Yarraville Oval in 2015, having been appointed as the Eagles’ senior coach.
Leading the Eagles’ reserves side last season, Callaway has extensive experience of the game, having spent time at four WRFL clubs over his career.
Coaching the reserve grade sides of Albion and Sunshine Kangaroos to multiple finals, Callaway worked as an assistant under Parkside’s Nathan Juegan before becoming the right-hand man of former Eagles coach Jesse Smith, who chose to step down from the role at the end of the season.
“Jesse decided to try and expand on his experience and to continue either to be coaching in Division One or at a higher level,” club president Tony Sticca said.
“He parted with our best wishes and hopes for his future development as a coach.”
Finishing the 2014 season with just one win, Callaway is looking forward to developing the healthy pool of young talent at the club, as they line up in Division Two next year.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge…it’s something I’ve wanted to do,” Callaway told Star Weekly.
“Without burning them out too early, our plan is to bleed kids into the side and introduce them into the senior mix.”
With the club’s pre-season kicking off on November 17, Sticca said that the feeling around the club is one of excitement.
“Dean is well liked by the playing group, very inspirational in his talks, and was widely supported with the appointment as our head coach for 2015,” he said.
“Our aim for season 2015 is to continue the development of our young playing group, and with the inclusion of experienced key players we hope to be challenging for finals in 2015.”
