The Belau Games was held from June 23 – July 02, 2017. There were 9 states that competed in wrestling. They included Ngarchelong, Ngatpang, Koror, Ngaraard, Sonsorol, Ngchesar, Peleliu, Hatahobei and Airai State. On June 28th, we had the technical meeting, medical and weigh-in. The weigh-in was held in the afternoon. On June 29th, day 1 of the Greco Roman Style competition there were about 34 athletes competing in the schoolboys, cadets, junior and senior divisions.
The freestyle competition was held on June 30, 2017 and this event included young kids competing from ages 2 and older in their respective categories and weight classes. There were also the schoolboys / girls division, cadets (boys / girls), junior (boys / girls) and senior division (male / female). It was very exciting to see the kids wrestle, many who were competing for the first time as well. There were about 80 athletes that competed in freestyle.
On day 3 of the games, the Beach Wrestling competition was held at Long Island. The event included school boys / girls division, junior boys / girls division and the mens / female freestyle competition. There were about 50 athletes that competed in BW. Lots of fun.
The best male performance went to Steve Austin Albis of Sonsorol State. The best female athlete performance went to Uilau Ilebrang Tarkong of Ngaraard State. The overall team ranking went to Ngarchelong State; 2nd place was Ngatpang State and then Koror State. Each of the athletes and state received trophies.
