After competing in the 2015 World Championships held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Christian Nicolescu returned to Palau in September to continue his training. Christian who is 22 years old is the son of Mrs. Kezia Etpison Nicolescu and Mr. Anton Cristian Nicolescu. On October 21st, Christian left to Japan to train at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan under the guidance of Head Coach Kohei Hasegawa and General Manager Hiroshi Ota. Coach Hasegawa represented Japan at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he competed in the men's Greco Roman 55 kg class. After the Olympics, Hasegawa returned to Japan to Coach at his University.
It’s exciting to have Christian visit Japan to train at Aoyama Gakuin because they have a lot of wrestlers and good training partners that can help him spar every day. It’s our hope that Christian can return as a higher caliber wrestler in preparation for the Olympic qualifications next year. We also hope to re-establish such exchange of wrestlers between Japan and Palau in the future especially with the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Since Japan is close to Palau, we hope to have Ota and his team visit Palau in the near future for a training camp especially since we do have a few wrestlers who will be attempting to qualify for the Olympic Games next year. Christian will be in Japa for a month before returning back to Palau.
