From Dec. 27, 2005 to January 08, 2005, BWF conducted a wrestling clinic with visiting Head Coach Ota Hiroshi, of Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan. Mr. Ota visited Palau in the past and this time, Ota spent about a week with Palau's wrestling team to train and practice during the holiday season. A wrestling camp was even held on the beach for 2 days in Ngaraard State with some of the wrestlers. With the introduction of Beach Wrestling into the Olympics, the participants were able to wrestle and practice on the beach, fish and swim. With the introduction of beach wrestling in the upcoming future tournaments and Olympics, BWF hopes to incorporate beach wrestling as part of our training and competition programs for the year.
Coach Ota came here 2 years ago and even brought wrestlers from his Aoyama Gakuin University to train in Palau. We are hoping that Ota can bring a team again, especially prior to the upcoming Micronesian Games to be held later this year. I would like to thank Mr. Ota Hiroshi for sharing his time with us and visiting Palau again. Also, special thanks to Peter Gayman, General Manager at Five Star Wholesale Foods for the food he provided during the wrestling camp and Delegate Tony Bells for letting us stay at his beach cottage. We hope that with the new year we can also introduce wrestling in the school programs and activities.
