Message from Executive Officer

Welcome to 2018 and a new season of Basketball.  There has been a lot of planning done for the current year as a result of the many positive and negative responses we received in the survey from Members.  Thank you to all of those who contributed.  Your feedback is essential to improving all aspects of our game.  You don't have to wait for a survey, you can always email me and I will do my best to incorporate it in the planning.  This year we will be focusing on Referee Development, Player Pathways and facility development.  We will also be producing an organisational Strategic Plan for the next 5 years.  We have many things to look forward to in the upcoming 18 months including the introduction of League 3 on 3, Australian School Sports Championships (August), National Wheelchair Basketball League game (May) and Arafura Games in 2019.  Further on in the email there are some questions and answers which I hope will assist you in registering and getting into the first season.  We have had some slight changes to nights/days played and draws, due to team numbers increasing in certain ages.
PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE REGISTERED BY THE 20TH JANUARY AS CLUBS WILL BE LOOKING TO FILL TEAMS AT THE SIGN ON DAY AND YOU MAY MISS OUT!  It is an onerous task on the club volunteers if you leave your registration until the last minute

When do registrations close for the 2018 season?
All registrations should be done before 20th January, to allow the club volunteers to place you into a team (secure your spot) and then be able to find new players from sign on day to first game on 5th Feb 2018.

I don't want to use my sports voucher, so how do I pay?
Go online to the DBA website and register as a player.  Once you get to the product section, manually tick the option 2018 DBA Registration $100 and pay by card.

I don't have my Sports Voucher yet so how do I register?
Go online to the DBA website and the sports voucher option will already be automatically selected.  Pay your BNT and Club fee and then bring in your voucher into the office or ticket office before the end of March.

Can I play 3 games before paying?
No player is allowed to play basketball without registering.  This is very important for insurance purposes not only for yourself but for other players.  Any person who plays without registering will forfeit their team points.  The BNT fee MUST be paid before a player takes the court.

Why wasn't my name on the courtside computer last season?
If players are not registered with clubs prior to commencement of competition, the club volunteers are unable to load in team names and numbers.  This results in delayed games, incorrect results and duplicate entries in the system.  Please ensure you register with sufficient time to enable YOUR club to enter information.

Can I play Div 3 and 4 in Seniors?
Players are able to play 2 consecutive grades within the Senior competition (including League).  Players that play 2 or more grades apart (eg Div 3 and 1) can only play up to 3 games in the highest division before being unable to return to lowest grade.

Do I have to play in my own age group?
Yes - players must play in their own age group, however are able to also play one grade above.  (Those players with extenuating circumstances can apply for a Permit).

What changes have been made to the season?
The only real change to the competition format is the end date, which is now Sat Sept 22nd for finals (and week leading up to it).
There have been minor changes to nights played for some Divisions.
There will be grading for All competitions with teams being relegated or promoted after Week 3.
In some junior competitions there will be a Division 3 implemented after grading.

How do I become a referee?
Attend the referee education course.
Email Brad Malady at operations@darwinbasketball.com.au

How do I find a club?
Go to the DBA website and click on club contacts.
Attend the Sign on day - Saturday 20th Jan 11am - 2pm

How do I get a clearance?
Complete the form (DBA website) and send/take to your club
Ensure all outstanding fees are paid to your club before requesting the clearance

How do I get a permit?
Complete the Permit Form on the DBA website and send to executive@darwinbasketball.com.au

When I register online, why do my registrations keep adding up?
You need to completely "log out" of the Sporting Pulse and log back in to remove items from the cart.  Just closing the screen and going back in does NOT remove products it just adds to it

Why have the game nights changed?
Game nights have changed in some Divisions due to increase in competition size in some Divisions.  This occurs frequently when age groups move up.

Is there still 5.30pm games?
Early starts have been scrapped due to member responses, however this does mean some games are now half hour later.

How do I register my team if I am not in a club?
Go to DBA website and scroll to bottom - or click here - the club is Darwin Basketball Association and enter your TEAM name.
Did you know DBA, as a foundation member receives a dividend from the CAS Club?  Did you know this is dependent on our support?  In order to maximise our share it is important that we as DBA Members show our support and loyalty.  This year we received the least of the Foundation clubs, as we supported the least.  We need to improve this!  ALL DBA members receive FREE membership!  Every time you visit, buy a drink, have a meal or use the bottle shop - it is important that you swipe your card!  We have DBA Temporary Membership cards and Membership application forms at the office and courtside!  Please support the club that supports you!

The Season Changes are in line with other sports and other Basketball Associations in Australia.
It enables people to play basketball in line with other sports or select to play just one season.
It makes it more affordable for people who may only want to play one season.
It enables new members to join basketball after they complete other sports seasons (ie September and April)
The Long season is a "once off" from Feb to Sept and will then be Sept to April and April to September.
The Christmas break in 2018 is a break for ALL! Because it is during the season there is no additional work for club volunteers over this break and enables coaches, administrators and club volunteers to have a real break.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
