Message from Executive Officer

For those of you I haven't met, my name is Kerri Savidge and I have been Executive Officer here at DBA since 4th July 2016 – 9 months.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and experiences presented to me so far and have now, with the support of the DBA Executive Board, signed a 2 year contract extension so am pleased to announce I will be remaining here until 30th June 2019.  I would like to thank everyone who has accepted me in this role and helped me to make Darwin my new home and look forward to the next 2 years.  I would particularly like to thank the Board of DBA for their belief in my abilities and for enabling me to make decisions and act accordingly.
Grand Finals for Challenge Season -  Finals week for the Challenge season will commence on Tuesday 13th June (as Monday 12th is a public holiday).  Senior finals, Social PBL and wheelchair will be held on normal nights.  U18’s will be on Friday night and U10, 12, 14 and 16 will be on Saturday followed by League finals.

Staffing – DBA is pleased to announce the appointment of Bradley Malady in the role of Game and Officials Development Officer.  Brad brings a wealth of experience as a player and referee and will assist in developing and improving our game.  He can be contacted on email – operations@darwinbasketball.com.au.  Stay tuned for information on upcoming referee, scoretable official courses, coaching courses and other initiatives as Brad settles into his role.
Expiry of NT School Sports Vouchers 31st May 2017
All of the green school vouchers will expire on May 31st 2017.  DBA will endeavour to have the Championship season open online for people to register, so as not to lose the use of these vouchers. althouhe season does not commence until late July/August.  You will need to bring them into the DBA office prior to this for us to redeem them.  No one will be chased up for these, but they will be useless if not redeemed prior to this date.
Alternatively, if you are a current member, you can use these vouchers at the DBA shop.  The full amount must be used for purchases and no change can be given.  The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm.
Score Table and Shot Clock -  For many players and parents, the idea of scoring a game is very daunting and one that people like to avoid.  We would like to make improvements to the game for the enjoyment of everyone, so will be running various courses to assist players, parents and spectators in learning these roles.  We have commenced this by putting the rules on each of the score tables.  These are simple rules, and should be easy to follow.  There are also pamphlets around on each score table that you can take and read.  They show a more in depth look at Stadium Scoring and Shot Clock.  Please keep your eye out for upcoming courses as one of the best ways to improve the game on the court is to improve off the court.  PS  The shot clock is one of the easiest jobs to learn so don’t be frightened of it – it makes the game far more enjoyable.  The aim for Championship season is to start running shot clock on all games from U14 upwards.
Level 1 Scoretable Course will be held on Monday 8th May and Tuesday 16th May form 6pm - 8.30pm.
Registrations will be set up on line and sent to all.  Keep your eye out!!

FEES EXPLAINED - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ – This season was the first time clubs and DBA as an association went to online registration and payment.  Whilst this was a great experience for some (to be able to pay both fees together, it was very confusing for a lot of people).  DBA, as an association, who administers a competition has fees.  These fees are $100 for Juniors and $115 for seniors.  Most Juniors use their NT school Sports vouchers.  The registration still MUST be done online, personal details updated to become part of the National database.  This then keeps a record and history of all games played, statistics etc and enables online transfers to be done.  Until the voucher is handed in, the player is NOT recorded as financial.  For Seniors the $115 formed part of a compulsory registration and worked very well.  Where a lot of people got confused was with their club payments.  Your clubs also charge a fee.  These fees vary in price and inclusions.  Some are yearly and some are half yearly.  Some needed to be paid online and some needed to be paid in other ways.  We will be working with clubs in the next season to try and simplify this process, but ALL DBA registrations will remain online.
So in a nutshell, there are 2 fees payable to play basketball.  Club fee and Association fee.  A proportion of your DBA fee is then paid to the state body.
DBA Shop – The shop at DBA has some new merchandise available.  Shirts, basketballs (all models, sizes and prices), ref shirts, whistles and lots more.  New stocks of water bottles, singlets, polos, shorts, towels will be available soon.  Shop is open Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm.  Pop up shops will occur when staff available.  We will be having all merchandise available for order online in the coming weeks.
- ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING –
The Annual General Meeting of DBA will be held on Sunday 7th May at the St Marys Football Club at 10am.  There will be 4 Board positions available.  Nominations for these positions are available on the website or by emailing executive@darwinbasketball.com.au.
Aussie Hoops – The new season for Aussie Hoops will commence on Monday 24th April, with sessions available Monday, Wednesday and Saturday morning.  Register online www.aussiehoops.com.au
Senior Referee Course – A referee course will be run specifically for those Seniors (over 18) who are currently involved in the game as a player, parent, coach of spectator, in an attempt to increase the number and quality of referees on the Senior competitions (Div 1 – 5).  The course will be a combined Level 0, Level 1C and will be run over 2 nights.  Sunday 23rd and Sunday 30th from 5pm – 7pm at DBA in the referee room.  By doing this course it will not only improve our game but will improve the overall quality of the competition.  Registrations will be online and a separate email invitation will be sent to all Senior players.  Parents and coaches keep an eye out on the website and facebook.
Survey -  An online survey will be sent out in the next week or so, for people to identify areas of improvements they would like to see.
Aussie Hoops – The new season for Aussie Hoops will commence on Monday 24th April, with sessions available Monday, Wednesday and Saturday morning.  Register online www.aussiehoops.com.au

Game tickets – All players need to get into the habit of purchasing tickets prior to the games.  If the coaches or referees need players at half time and they are off buying tickets it is difficult for the games to remain on time.  There are some proposed changes coming so it is important players start to get used to purchasing tickets earlier.

Ladder adjustments and make up games – Please be advised we are working on adjustments that have to be made to the Ladder (particularly the U12 girls), and these will be fixed soon.  Problems occurred due to first 3 grading games.

ANZAC DAY – The stadium will be closed on Tuesday 25th April for ANZAC Day.  Games from this night will be rescheduled to another date.

Footwear – It is a Health and Safety requirement and condition of entry for all personnel to wear footwear in the stadium.  Please ensure you and your children have appropriate footwear on at all times.

Renovations – DBA and the Northern Territory Government have funded some much needed renovations.  These will commence on Sunday 9th April with the installation of LED lighting on all courts and Big Ass fan between court 1 and 2.  The stadium will also be completely pest controlled and air conditioning fixed.  In the June holidays we will commence the resurfacing of Courts 3/4/5 with a FIBA approved court surface.  Courts will be lengthened and widened to full courts size.  Courts 1 and 2 will be re sanded and re linemarked.  There will be substantial works done to move the backboards and funds permitting, replace the old ones. We are trying to minimise disruptions.

Sportsmanship – There has been a noticeable decline in sportsmanship in a lot of games.  Can parents, coaches and players please ensure they end the game with a handshake of all players, coaches and referees.  This small act goes along way in improving relationships and ensuring Good Sportsmanship.
