MICRO GAMES DAY 1

In the first game of the day Team Guam women ran out easy winner over RMI by the score of 85 to 31. For Guam Brianna Benito had a game high score of 22 points and was well assisted by Kathryn Castro with 16. For RMI Rani Hadley and Stacy Lejjena had 13 and 11 respectively.

Guam showed all their muscle in opening up against Chuuk with a fast running game to open up a 14 point lead by 10 minutes, but in the closing 5 minutes of the quarter Chuuk came back to be behind by just 5 at the first break. Obviously this didn’t please the Guam coaching staff who ran their starters for longer in the second quarter and opened a huge 50 – 26 lead at the end of the half. After a much closer 3rd quarter it was an easy win eventually by Guam to the score of 81 – 53.

Team Pohnpei came up against CNMI men next and after starting well through the first quarter, Pohnpei fell into a hole at by the half time break to trail 29-34. A strong 3rd quarter by Pohnpei saw them lead by 10 points at the last change. CNMI tried everything in the final quarter and looked like coming over the top of their opponents in the last 3 minutes, but Pohnpei withstood the onslaught to win by 4 points (71-67). William Hawley of Pohnpei was game high scorer with 18 and his team mate Troy Yainelvo had 16. For CNMI Jericho Cruz had 16, Dan Barcinas had 15 and Jeremy Winkfield dropped in 13 points.

Palau women faced off against CNMI in the 5.00pm game and started slowly with lack lustre offence and led by just 2 at the first break. In the second half the Palau offence started to work better, and with improved shooting by veteran Stephanie Calvo and good work inside by Courtney Tellei saw the Palauans stretch the lead out to 8 points by the end of the 3rd quarter and they eventually ran out winners by 64-47. For CNMI their veteran player in Connie Comacho had 13 points and rising star Lia Rangamar had 9. For Palau their main scorers were Stephanie Calvo with 16 and Carrissa Trolii with 15.

The final game of the day had Palau men and RMI matched up and watched by a near capacity crowd of over 1,200 people. The RMI team came to play from the outset and with a good height advantage ran their Flex offence with good spacing and timing. Palau also play a Flex Offence but their team work was sadly lacking throughout the entire game. The more aggressive “in your face” defence by RMI troubled the outside shooters of Palau and their offensive rebounding gave them many second chance points. In the dying stages Palau tried to play catch-up ball but the poise of the RMI team saw them run out comfortable winners by 7 points (66-59).

In today’s games Chuuk and Kosrae men meet at 11.00am, RMI and Chuuk women play at 1.00pm, Guam and RMI men meet in what should be a thriller at 3.00pm and then Palau women take on the fancied Guam team at 5.00 and Palau men then meet up with CNMI men at 7.00pm.
