West All Stars take NBL Super League title

Sticking to their game plan, the West All Stars humbled the highly financed FR Spoilers, 87-75 Friday night to take the championship crown of the 2012 IP&E NBL Super League played at the Palau National gym.

Trailing 41-35 at the end of the first half, the West All Stars went back to their game plan to limit FR Spoilers main gunners Michael Bombita and Coco Gonzales. In the third canto, the West All Stars began their surge as they held the Spoilers with a 25-17 run to grab the lead at 60-58.

Then, the West All Stars continued their offensive attack as they limited the Spoilers to 17 points in the final quarter as to their 27 to seal the game and take the win.

The game heated up in the finals minute of the game as FR Spoilers Lester Mendoza made a hard foul against Dennis Castro. The situation almost had the both benches clearing out to stop the commotion as cooler heads prevailed. But game officials gave Castro a technical foul for second motion, but the West All Stars did not mind the call as they gave focused on winning the game.

Douglas Schmidt finished the game with 20 points as teammates Perry Oiterong and Reid Una Rikrik added 17 and 16 markers, respectively.

True to their plan, the West All Stars limited FR Spoilers main man Michael Bombita to 22 and Gonzales to 3 points.

“In our first meeting in the eliminations, that was our plan to stop Bombita and Gonzales. That is why we have Douglas, Perry, Traxx and John Stills ready to man then in defense. We are just happy our game plan work and everybody gave their contribution to the win. It was a team effort despite having no time to practice our plays. I give it to the players,” said West All Stars head coach Sinton Soalablai.

Meanwhile, the East All Stars bested the Nationals 17 and Under squad, 85-74 in the consolation game with Mike Williams finishing with 28 points.

The tournament, which is supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF), is a tobacco, alcohol and drug free program.   By Peter Erick L. Magbanua (Island Times News)
