Father Duenas Memorial School graduate Michael Sakazaki, was presented yesterday with legislative resolution by Sen. Brant McCreadie for being selected as a member of the International Basketball Federation Oceania's 2013 All-Star Team and for being one of the top 10 male basketball players in the Oceania region.

The presentation took place at McCreadie's office in Hagåtña. Sakazaki was commended for his academic and athletic achievements throughout high school.

"Parallel to Michael's accomplishments as a scholar-athlete, we commend him for giving back to the community through his civic involvements with Guam Animals in Need, St. Dominic's Senior Care Home, the Guam Special Olympics, the Coastal Cleanup, Kamalen Karidat, and various efforts of community volunteerism," McCreadie said, reading the resolution.

"We would like to further extend an un dankolo na si Yu'us ma'åse' to Michael for being a role model to the island's youth in maintaining his outstanding athleticism, academics and civic responsibility to our island community, thereby gaining him acceptance to Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he will further his education," McCreadie added.

Sakazaki's proud family, friends and coaches also attended the presentation to recognize his excellence.

Thankful, honored

"First of all, it is truly an honor, and I can't thank all of you enough for your tremendous efforts in supporting me along the way, through the ups and downs of practices and homework sessions," Sakazaki said. "You have all been there for me and I want to thank you again."

"I have always learned to be respectful and to remember where we came from, and that you always should give back to your community," Sakazaki said. "So with that being said, I do plan on going to Chaminade University to earn a Ph.D. in physical therapy so that I could come back to Guam to help our island people."
