TWO NEW RECORDS.
In the throws in Pune, Raobu Tarawa was using unfamiliar weights of implement, although we did obtain a 1.75 kg. Discus this year. In the 6 kg. Shot on Tuesday, he completed three legal putts, the best being 13.04m. (Being "legal" is a great lesson at this level of inexperience.) Then yesterday in the Discus (1.75 kg.) he threw roughly the same as in Tarawa, with 39.35m. as his best. This placed him 12th. of the 14 throwers. Again he achieved three legal throws. Thus, using new weights in competition for the first time, he set two new weight records.
In the jumps, on Tuesday morning, in the High Jump Qualifying, David Birati started at 1.65m. and was clear first time up to 1.80m. He went out at 1.85. He needed to break his own National Record (1.92) to get into the Final. The Triple Jump yesterday just preceded the Discus. We had arranged for an 11m. take-off board (which suited others as well) and he reported early for a warm-up and check-in. There was a problem with the sound system and he missed his call. Thus he did not take part.
Standards in the rest of the competition seem to be high, with a number of records being broken. This is partly explained by the progress being made every four years.
The next Commonwealth Youth Games will be in the Isle of Man (west of England) in 2011, and then it will resume an "every four years" cycle, to 2015, 2019, etc.
