In the Special Olympics World (Summer) Games, held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, from March 14 - 21, Team Kiribati had just two Track athletes.
17-year-old Tekariti Karotu was entered for the W Long Jump and 100m. Run. In the Long Jump preliminary on March 13, she won it with 1.35m. Then in the final on the last day (March 20) she beat the other three finalists with 2.20m. One gold medal ! The 100m. run for her category was held on March 18th. and again she won, in 20.68, beating seven other runners. Another gold ! Image of Nei Tekariti with her gold medals !
The second KIR athlete was Tenene Tukem. This 26-year-old male athlete won his Long Jump preliminary on March 13 with 2.85m. Then in the final he used an illegal technique. He too contested the 100m. run for his category, and placed fifth (out of seven) in the final on March 19, with 15.09.
These World Games attracted over 7000 athletes from 190 countries. Thus an amazing experience for the two Kiribati sportspeople ! Well done to both of them !
