Expanding the work in schools and the community.
Three new Sports Development Officers have been engaged to expand the work of KAA both in schools and in the wider community of Kiribati. Two of them, Rabangaki Nawai and Nooa Takooa, are international athletes themselves. The third, and current KAA Treasurer, is Nei Kairao Tune, herself a qualified coach.
Rabangaki is part of the Primary Schools Project (PSP) and is touring the Primary Schools engaging them in the sport and helping them by using "Kids' Athletics" equipment from IAAF. Prior to joining the Kiribati Marine service he gained two Oceania silver medals in the Mens' Octathlon.
Nooa has also travelled to several overseas competitions with KAA as a sprinter/relay runner. His work is now based, via the AOD programme, in the Secondary Schools. All this work in the schools has been approved by the Ministry of Education which has stated it wishes to be more involved and provide support.
Nei Kairao is working in the community with a main purpose to encourage more women to take up various Athletics events.
The Development section of Oceania AA is taking a keen interest in these projects and it is to be hoped that this impetus will not just be short-term but will achieve some continuity for successive school populations. We will see !
