EXCEPTIONAL POTENTIAL !
Two boys from St. Louis are back in training and looking forward to the 2008 season when one or both of them might become a KAA international ! They both have high potential on the track, as they showed last year. Mikaere is one of the best in his age-group at middle-distance. Toonika, who has been training for several weeks with Rabangaki (the Kiribati participant in the World Indoor Championships in Valencia next month), is a sprinter. In 2007 he won the Courage Award for completing his final leg of a relay, having been knocked down on the final bend, thus gaining the points by which St. Louis won (again) the Inter-School Championship !
Rabangaki has been a great help in inspiring and directly assisting Toonika. Mikaere, who started his preparations this morning, showed by his attitude that he could be set to achieve much this year.
IN THE FRAME !
Mikaere was born in 1990, and will be eligible for the Commonwealth Youth Games in India in October. As with all athletes of their age in Kiribati, they will have important exams. at the end of the year. We hope they are able, with guidance rather than pressure, to prioritise their training and manage their time so that they also maintain a high standard in their studies. Time will tell !
Photos show them working, a shoeless Mikaere on the steps of the Stadium building, and Toonika on the cones. Also the cool-down example of Rabangaki with Toonika. More photos on the next story !
