EXTRA RACE FOR TEBWAO.
After he won the KAA Half-Marathon in Tarawa last month, it was thought to be a good idea for Tebwao Tekiau to compete in the Oceania AA Half-Marathon on Gold Coast on Sunday, July 1st. After his race, he will join the rest of the Kiribati team who are staying with relatives in Brisbane while waiting for their connecting flights back home.
Up to the time of his departure from Cairns this morning (Saturday) he was thrilled by the idea of having another chance to race.
RESULT.
Tebwao competed in the Gold Coast Airport Half-Marathon and finished in a time of 1-33-30. Images are of Tebwao in the stand, and running in the 5k.
CLOSING CEREMONY.
Last night, the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 OAA Championships was held at the Nomads Resort in Cairns. As usual it included the minimum of speeches and the maximum of entertainment. The latter was provided by items from each of the competing nations. Thus it included a traditional dance, in costume which the team had brought, by Teina Tewaaki. This was typical of Kiribati dance with elaborate head, hand and foot movements and was enthusiastically received.
The next version of the OAA Regional Championships will be staged in Tahiti (French Polynesia) in June next year. We will need to practice our French in the meantime !
