Rellie Kaputin is back in full swing training with Coach Phillip Newton and participated in her first competition in almost nine months last weekend at the Queensland State Championships in Brisbane. The Oceania and Pacific Games Long Jump Champion injured herself doing a demonstration jump at the Sir John Guise stadium in August last year whilst assisting with a clinic for children. Whilst the broken bone in her foot healed up some time ago, the rehabilitation process took longer than expected and Kaputin only resumed full training three weeks ago.
With the Tokyo clock counting down, Kaputin is determined to get back to full fitness and her best form as soon as possible, but with the Australia season drawing to a close she will have to look elsewhere for competition opportunities in order to improve her world ranking. The Queensland Track Classic, one of only nine meets on the World Tour that has a Silver ranking status is only two weeks away and that will be her next competition. Good performances at Meets such as this attract valuable bonus points under the new World Athletics Ranking System
I’m just taking one step at a time said Kaputin and the good thing is that I came out of the competition feeling very good, with no pain and no soreness . I will have six weeks of hard training after the Classic and we will reassess the situation in April Kaputin thanked physiotherapist Hendriella Vilosi from the HP Unit for her commitment in recent months, as well as Team PNG physio Matthew Natusch and Dr Kapua Kapua for their assistance with her recovery.
