Toea Wisil won her second gold today at Apia Park as she blitzed the field in the womens 400m to win the gold in 53.90 seconds from Leonie Beu in second with a personal best 55.71 seconds. PNG Athletics took its medal tally to 27 and though there was only one gold on day three there were lots of very good results.
As expected Australia’s steven Solomon cruised to 400m gold but the good news for PNG is that we placed second third and fourth with Daniel Baul, Benjamin Aliel and Shadrick Tansi all running under 48secs. With the girls placing 1,2 and 5 in the 400m PNG looks very good for tomorrows 4*400m relays.
Messach Fred also won a silver medal in the mens 1500m and Debono Paraka won bronze in the mens hammer throw with a throw of 36.57m. The three PNG entrants in the mens 200m all qualified for tomorrow’s 200m semi final with Shadrick Tansi running a huge personal best (21.37seconds) as did emmanual wanga (21.64).
Ephraim Lerkin and Daniel Baul both cruised into Fridays 400m hurdles final with defending champion Mowen Boino just scraping into the final after a disappointing run. Thursday will see lots of exciting action at Apia Park with numerous gold medal opportunities for the PNG team. The programme includes the mens 5000m, womens 1500m, womens Javelin, the womens triple jump, the mens long jump at the 4*400m relays
