Two more National records in Athletics fell last weekend, making a total of four for the year to date. In Port Moresby on Saturday Debono Paraka broke his own National record in the discus by 46cm with a throw of 50.21 metres. Going over the 50m mark has been Paraka’s aim since early last year but the best he could manage last year was 49.75 which was an achievement in itself, breaking Albert Momberger’s long standing national record. Meanwhile over in Hobbs , New Mexico Rellie Kaputin improved on the 12.65m national triple jump record that she set on her way to winning the Pacific Games Gold medal last year, clearing 12.78m with the last jump of the competition. This brings the total of records set this year to four, with Toea Wisil setting a new 200m record in Canberra in February and Jacklyn Travertz a hammer throw record in March.
“Our athletes set ten national records last year said Athletics PNG Secretary Philip Rehder which was a great achievement, and it is possible they will equal or better that this year”. We have Toea Wisil threatening the 100m national record and Rellie the long jump record plus we have both Theo Piniau and Nelson Stone chasing Rio selection in the 200m. Added to this we have Adrine Monagi going very well in the heptathlon and Peniel Richard fast improving in the triple and high jumps.
