Glory toss Coyne into the coaching mix

FOOTBALL Hall of Fame WA inductee Chris Coyne has joined Perth Glory as the club's Under-20s Head Coach.
Coyne, who was inducted into the Hall of Champions in 2016, has spent the last seven years as a very successful NPLWA coach with Bayswater United, leading the club to four league titles (one of them in an unbeaten run in 2015), four Night Series crowns and two State Cups. He also had stints as State team coach.
As a player, he turned out seven times for the Socceroos (making several World Cup qualifying game appearances) and played eight times for Australia's under-23 team.
He left Perth SC as a teenage centre back to play in the UK with the likes of West Ham United, Brentford, Dundee, Luton Town (winning the 2005 League One title) and Colchester United, who paid a then club record fee (in 2008) of 350,000 pounds to sign him from Luton.
After an injury-plagued 18 months at Colchester, he returned to WA in 2009 and made 32 appearances for the Glory. He also had a brief spell on loan with Chinese Super League club Liaoning Hongyun before joining Bayswater as a coach.
Coyne is one of three former Glory players who have been handed coaching roles at the A-League club, with Steven McGarry named as the club's new A-League Assistant Coach, Ruben Zadkovich coming in to operate as both a second A-League Assistant Coach and PGFC Academy Head Coach and Coyne being appointed PGFC Academy Under-20s Head Coach.
New Glory Head Coach Richard Garcia, who recently succeeded Tony Popovic, said: "Coyney has done extremely well coaching in the NPL, played at a high level and has a deep understanding of the game.
"This is a chance for him to come in and work with elite players and it's vital for us to have quality coaches at that end in order to help produce the next generation of Glory players."
FOOTNOTE: Chris Coyne is a member of a famous football family. His father John is a former Australian international (4 games) and Brisbane City and Apia Leichhardt player. John also played in the UK with Tranmere Rovers and Hartlepool and with several clubs in the US.
Chris's younger brother, Jamie, played over 150 games with Perth Glory and also had a stint in Holland with ADO Den Haag. Chris's teenage son, Aidan, is a member of Glory's youth squad. Last year he had time in the UK with Luton Town, West Brom, Aston Villa and Stoke City.
