Bayswater defeat Mandurah to sit third on NPLWA ladder

Report by Tristan Wheeler

Bayswater City comfortably defeated Mandurah City 3-0 at Securitas Protect Stadium on Saturday, with goals from Gustavo Giron Marulanda, David Stokoe and Todd Howarth sealing the victory.

Coach Chris Coyne said he was pleased with his side's performance, but he would have liked a more clinical finish from his players.

“We made a real emphasis starting from the warm up, that everything we did was high tempo, and I thought that they’d struggle with that,” he said.

“We’ve got some good players that can play at high pace. I’m pleased with the result but I thought it could have been 5 or 6, and that’s no disrespect to Mandurah.

“Credit to them, they worked their socks off. If they can get a couple of wins they will be there or thereabouts.”

Mandurah coach Doug Hesketh was quick to praise his team for putting in a great effort against a top side, including the younger players who stepped up in place of their injured teammates.

“I thought we gave a good account of ourselves, to be honest,” he said.

“We’ve got nine injuries from our 23 man squad, ranging from four weeks to a year.

“I’m really proud of them. I think we have a few wins in us, we just have to keep going.”

Bayswater started the game at a high tempo, pushing Mandurah onto the back foot. It paid off early, with Bor Bor Sam being pulled down in the penalty box to give Marulanda the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot.  He finished confidently to Bradley Eiffe’s left to give Bayswater the lead in the 6th.

They continued to build pressure and a cross in the 17th minute slipped through Mandurah’s defensive line to find Stokoe unmarked at the back post. He turned the ball home to double Bayswater’s advantage.

At half time the score was 2-0. Mandurah’s best chance of the half occurred when a driven Jeffrey Bright shot was pushed wide by Devon Spence for a corner.

The second half did not match the intensity and pace of the first, the game slowing as each side began to feel the effects of a manic first half.

Todd Howarth capped an excellent game in the 89th, putting the ball into the bottom corner to give Bayswater the third goal, and seal the match.

The result takes Bayswater to 20 points, with a game in hand. Mandurah remains at the foot of the league but can take encouragement from the efforts of their younger players.
