Beginner Referee’s

WHY REFEREE?

There are lots of reasons why people get involved in refereeing. Some of the common reasons are:

  • participate in the sport and being part of the community;
  • improve their knowledge and understanding of the rules of basketball;
  • making friends;
  • earning “pocket money”, saving for a holiday etc
  • keep fit;
  • have fun!

Some referees are interested only in helping at their local association whilst others may aspire to state, national or international competition!  The pathway exists so that everyone can participate to the level of their skill and interest.

Green Shirt Program

If you see referees wearing a Green Shirt then it's important for you to know that they are beginners.

Please give them a chance to develop their skills without harassment or abuse as they are only just starting their development as an official.

If you wish to provide constructive feedback, please do so via the correct channels – Basketball Development manager or mentor referees.

Aim of the Green Shirt Program:

  • Make new officials easily identifiable so that they are easy to recognise and support
  • Promote the program to the sports community to raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials
  • Assist in reducing pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials
  • Create a culture of support towards these new officials via the education of players, spectators, coaches and the media about Codes of Conduct, Play By The Rules, Sideline Rage and Sport Rage

Shadowing Program

Beginner Referees will start their referee Development in the Shadowing Program:

Beginner referees will be required to ‘Shadow’ a more experienced referee in order to get some on court experience and knowledge.

Beginner referees that are shadowing will be required to have their green shirts on and whistles in hand.
