Inglewood title push gathers pace

Report by Ryan Borrett

Inglewood United continued their impressive run of form with a solid 2-1 win over Sorrento at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

The result put United just three points behind leaders Perth Glory, who play on Sunday.

Kenny Keogh gave Inglewood the lead in the first half before an error by Inglewood keeper Alex Dunn led to Cameron Teece equalising for Sorrento minutes later.

Inglewood regained their advantage late in the first half when David Cyrus headed home from a corner.

Sorrento had a great chance to make it 2-2 from the penalty spot in the second half but Jordan Roberts' spot-kick was saved brilliantly by Dunn, who made up for his earlier mistake.

There was some controversy surrounding the penalty decision as Sorrento striker Jack Salter’s shot after Cyrus’ handball found the back of the net but advantage wasn’t given and instead the penalty was awarded.

The win for Inglewood sees them remain in fourth place in the National Premier Leagues WA standings but they are now just one point behind Bayswater City, who are down to third after they lost their Round 19 match against Armadale 4-1.

Inglewood coach Andy Keogh was happy with how his side played and said his team was relaxed about their chances of a high-placed finish.

"We deserved to win,” he said.

“We totally dominated possession and our movement and rotations were superb today, probably the best all season.

“The lads are in good spirit, we’re just ticking along nicely and taking each game as it comes and waiting to see what happens above us.”

After consecutive wins in the last two weeks Sorrento will feel unlucky not to have taken anthing from the match in which they created good chances.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was disappointed with the result.

“I thought we deserved more out it and we didn’t deserve to get beat,” he said.

“But key decisions go against you and there’s nothing you can do.”

Inglewood looked impressive from the start and Keogh gave his side the lead in the 28th minute after Jamie Murphy’s low cross found him at the far post for a simple finish.

Sorrento got some good fortune shortly after as Dunn’s short goal kick didn’t reach anyone and was intercepted by Teece, who ran in rounded the keeper to make it 1-1.

But Inglewood took back their advantage in the 37th minute as Ellis Healing’s great corner found Cyrus at the far post and he outjumped his marker to head in to the bottom corner.

Inglewood controlled possession in the second half and were lively in attack and could have scored more goals had they been in better form in front of goal in the match.

Dunn made up for his early error with an excellent save from Roberts' penalty in the 73rd minute but Sorrento were unlucky that advantage was not played as Salter stuck the ball into the net.

Inglewood will hope to extend their seven-match unbeaten league streak next week against ECU Joondalup as their NPL WA title push goes on.

Sorrento face Subiaco next week in a crucial game for the survival of both teams.
