FOR the first time the Albion Football Club’s history, the club is fielding an Under-15 girls team.
With 2017 set to be a landmark year for women’s footy, the Cats decided the time was right to form a girls team.
“We were trying to get a girls side up and for a long time it didn’t look like it was going to happen and then with about a week to go they all turned up,” President and Under-15 coach Gavan Taylor said.
“I think we had about 30 at our last training session and they are all keen as mustard, which is great.
“They are all lovely girls.
“They are here all the time and they do all the right things.”
Players, Taylah Gibbs, Keira Dorrington and Rorie Lowe said the reason they decided to play footy was because they wanted to play alongside their friends.
“We are a new team, we were quite late into the competition, but we are improving each week,” Gibbs said.
“We got smashed a few times, but we built our confidence back up and continued to play.”
The trio say they get a good adrenalin rush when they cross the white line each Sunday.
“Everyone says that girls can’t play footy, but we say no, we can play,” Gibbs said.
“Everyone gets shocked whenever we say we play footy.
“So we want to prove those people wrong and show them that we can.”
