EDFL U/16s win at the GIPPSLAND JUNIOR CARNIVAL
Report on todays games.
Congratulations to the EDFL U/16 team for winning the Evans Petroleum Cup at the Gippsland Interleague carnival held at the Yinnar Recreation Reserve today. The EDFL won all of its three games. It opened its campaign with victory over the Gippsland League by two points before it backed up with an 11 point win over the Alberton League and finished in fine style with a 41 point victory over the Mid-Gippsland league. The tackling and pressure put on the opposition players especially in the opening match against the GFL was outstanding and also the ability to launch quick fire attacks from defence was terrific.
Nar Nar Goon pocket dynamo Callum Tyler was voted the best EDFL player over the three games.
He covered plenty of ground used the ball well and played a pivotal role against the GFL in the first match and again at critical times against Alberton. Tyler capped of a tremendous day with another very good game against the MGFL.
Longwarry tall Jesse Davies dominated the ruck duels in the opening match and with strong support around the packs from rover Callum Tyler and two early opportunistic goals by Ellinbank forward Joel Paredes the EDFL quickly seized control against the GFL. The EDFL led by 11 points at half time and had to withstand a strong surge by the GFL in the second half but thanks to some aggressive running by Longwarry speedster Kane Oldham and a terrific running goal by Ellinbank's Mat Notman and some tight defence led by Bunyip’s Ben Stewart the EDFL held on to a morale boosting two point win to set the tone for the rest of the day.
In the second game the Alberton got the jump on the EDFL and posted a 10 point lead at half time before the EDFL dug deep with a four goal to one second half. Calllum Tyler again made his presence felt and was lent terrific support by Goon team mate Bailey Beck and Koo Wee Rup’s Mitch Tribuzi who both provided plenty of grunt work at the stoppages while Mat Notman presented well across the forward line.
For a good deal of the game the EDFL had difficulty trying to avoid Kilcunda-Bass central defender Lochlan Scott who made many good intercepts and ran ball out of defence with pace and drove it forward with some searching kicks. With scores level with less than five minutes to go it was Tyler again who came to the fore when he outmanoeuvred his opponent in a one on one contest and ran onto the ball to put through the sealer. Neerim’s Isiaiah Abrahams and the Dusties Travis Ogden came to the rescue a number of times in defence and Longwarry forward Jedd Serong started to find his touch with some strong leads and contested marks in the second half.
In the third and final game the EDFL raced to an 18 point lead at half time against the MGFL with two goals apiece to Mat Notman and Mitchell Tribuzi and another to the well performed Bailey Beck. Jedd Serong started to stamp his influence on the game more as it went on and ruckman Jesse Davies continued to show his agility and poise all over the ground. Mat Notman grew with confidence with each game and finished with three majors while Kane Oldham was a driving force and Ben Stewart and Buln Buln’s James Ireland contested strongly in defence.
It was a good team effort across all games and followed up a big win over the Maryborough-Castlemaine League in the VCFL championships in May for the same side. All players made a contribution over the day and carried themselves in the manner of far more seasoned players both on and off the field over the campaign and on game day. It has been a long time since an EDFL team has won this carnival.
A big thank you coach Daniel Crowley and all the support staff led by team manager Ian Legg, runner and league junior development officer Gerard Bongiorno and trainer Alan Massaro. Apologies to those who assisted and not acknowledged.
Well done boys and hope you all have bright future with your football career!
