It may have been a weekend off for a lot of the higher grade teams but that hasn’t stopped the stories flowing into the Diatribe this week.
Bromance amongst Magpies
To kick it off, insiders have informed me there has been a bromance developing between Western Suburbs’ recruits, Jordan Etto and Jake Ross. If I turn your eyes to the left, you can see a photo of the two sharing an intimate moment together post a recent game. We hope Jordan Etto doesn't take after Ross' training habits - as he only completes the warm up. Ross has been referred to as the ‘Warm up King!’ Wests hope that Jordan follows the footsteps of inspirational leader Spud Mumme and his better looking brother Taran.
Benbow shoots an arrow
Danny was intrigued when this photo came across Facebook of Manly-Warringah star, Gareth Benbow (left). I have been told the marketing managers at Tinder have been in touch with Benbow to put him in their upcoming singles marketing campaign.
Hard lesson for Bodeker
Following Camden’s Luke Bodeker's first effort in the middle and earning an "apparent" hard ball get instead of hanging out near the BBQ knocking over 2 steak and eggs rolls like he does pre-game, he has asked coach, Chris Hughes to only play forward and kick goals because “no-one can touch him and end up like this picture (see left).”
Armitage impresses in VFL Debut
"He didn't look out of place." That was the Northern Blues (Carlton affiliate) Football Club's assessment of Ty Armitage, in his VFL debut, and we're not surprised! His stats read 5 kicks, 5 handballs (10 disposals), 3 marks, 4 handball receives. Unfortunately his side couldn’t get over the line in the 28 point loss to Box Hill boasting a number of Hawthorn stars. We will be watching with interest to see how the former Phelan Medallist goes for the rest of the season.
In with the Newman
It’s no wonder why Macquarie University Division One coach, Stu Newman was recognised as the AFL NSW/ACT Team Member of the Year after his efforts last Saturday. He kicked off his day setting up for the Independent Schools Program at Bat and Ball Oval before hopping up to Macquarie University to coach his senior side to a convincing win over Pennant Hills before trekking back to the SCG to go into camp with the NSW/ACT Womens side in his role as a line coach.
Ranga gunning for dual win
Star Pennant Hills utility, Ranga Ediriwickrama has played an even mix of First grade and Reserves due to fitness and availability. He was caught asking Gus McKiernan (Pennant Hills stat know-all) on Saturday, 'Has any player ever won both the Phelan and the Snow Medal in the same year? Because I think I've probably got them both just about stitched up already ...'
The Angel files
On the subject of Pennant Hills, the popular Tom Angel can’t escape another whack from his teammates. After starting the season in blistering form but to his distress, failing to be picked in the Sydney AFL Representative side, Tom Angel said via text message to a teammate .... 'If Cheese (Alex Goodall) was still here, I'm sure he could have pulled some strings and got me a start ' ..... Sorry Tommy , it takes more than three good games to earn a reputation.
Bats battle for a good cause
The UTS Bats are holding their annual State of Origin fundraising night with all proceeds to go to CanTeen Australia. Players are to bring $10 to buy a bandanna in your state's colours. A sausage sizzle and drinks will be served after the states have battled it out to be #1 and the Iron Bat has been crowned! There has been already plenty of debate about who will win between NSW/ACT, Victoria, South Australia and NT/Qld/Tas/WA/International. Well done to the Bats!
Collins knows his place
The Manly-Warringah Giants are said to be rejoicing after 8th string Centre Half Forward, Ben Collins has decided to stay in Sydney and not move to Canada. The turning point was landing a part time coffee job. "Never really made coffee but I am a dreamer man this could take me to the big time". Brayden Fowler is happy though to have someone to fetch his balls after set shot practice.
Love is in the air
Whilst on Fowler, a huge romance is developing at the Giants between him and Jackson Pola-Smith after being regularly seen catching up for Yogurtland, FIFA and Mac and Cheese. After being the sole focus up forward last year, Fowler has been quoted "I did it all last year and could again. But with Jackson we are like Buddy and Tippett it's sick man shackas." One question, shackas?
Zikman reaches the summit
Sam "Selfie" Zikman has been welcomed back to Pennant Hills after his honeymoon to an already potent forward-line. Despite posting numerous selfies about trekking Machu Picchu, identities at the club are convinced he caught a cab or had some South American rickshaw driver take him to the top!
Extra leg for Edmonds
Finally, one of Danny’s favourites, Thomas "Leggies" Edmonds makes a return to the Diatribe. Danny has been reliably informed of an instance where the Demons were playing UNSW/ES earlier in the year where unfortunately “Leggies” cousin, Michael Johnston did his knee. “Leggies” was heard to say "hope it's his ACL or I might lose my spot." Fast forward to Penno Ladies Day where young Caitlin won the Ladies Longest Kick competition.....senior coach, Chris Yard said to Edmonds, "lucky she could only kick 29m because if she could kick 30, you'd lose your spot."
