Westfield FFA Cup moved to WA Athletics Stadium
The historic first Westfield FFA Cup matches involving Perth clubs will be played at the WA Athletics Stadium next month after discussions involving Stirling Lions, Bayswater City, Football West and Football Federation Australia.
Stirling and Bayswater City initially had been scheduled to take on Hyundai A-League opponents Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory at Macedonia Park, the Lions’ home ground.
But FFA was unable to sanction the match because the venue did not meet the competition’s lighting criteria for games involving Hyundai A-League teams.
FFA and Football West worked closely with Stirling and Bayswater to determine the most suitable venue before confirming the matches would be played at the WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont. The venue is the home ground of National Premier Leagues WA club Subiaco AFC.
Perth Glory’s A-League home venue, nib Stadium, was unavailable due to scheduled ground maintenance.
Football West chairman Liam Twigger urged fans to get behind the FFA Cup games.
“These two games will go down in history as the very first Westfield FFA Cup games in WA and we hope football fans will celebrate that by attending the matches and supporting the game,” he said.
“Stirling and Bayswater could not have asked for a more exciting challenge. Brisbane Roar are the Hyundai A-League champions and Melbourne Victory have had great success over the years. We’re all looking forward to experiencing the ‘magic of the cup’ in Perth.”
Stirling will take on Roar on Tuesday, August 19, and Bayswater meet Victory on Wednesday, August 20. Both games kick-off at 7.30pm.
Ticketing details will be released soon.
